Schools in Scotland

The education system of Scotland is quite different from the rest of the United Kingdom. Scotland became the first country after Sparta in ancient Greece that brought the public education system for the first time. Education in schools was made compulsory in Scotland with the Education Act of 1496 following which in the year 1561, the Church of Scotland introduced a special programme for spiritual reform in schools, and it brought within its scope all schools in all regions of the country. In the year 1872, with the implementation of the Education Act, power of control over education was out of the hands of the Church.

Children in Scotland generally enter school between the age of 4 ½ or 5 ½. The basic education is of primary school for seven years and during this time they finish their seven years to complete the main standard. After completing the basic education they go for the secondary school level education.
